FROM THE DISTANT PRESIDENT

We had an uneventful trip west with the horses. We spent 3 nights at “horse motel” locations we found on the internet and one night at the Sheridan, Wyoming Fairgrounds. If you are traveling with horses and there are no horse motels in the area you need, look for a county or city fairground, most of them have stables and offer overnight boarding.

We have been following the ‘August like’ weather you are experiencing. We have had just the opposite, unseasonably cool weather and rain. Montana is normally a dry area with about 14 inches of annual rainfall, so everything is kind of brown by this time of year. Thanks to the cool weather and rain it is currently a beautiful green. Today we are predicted for our first 80 degree day. We are planning a picnic to the Gravely Mountains to see the wild flowers. Unfortunately our internet service does not support uploading pictures very well, so it may be a while before we can ‘update’ you.

We brought Michelob and Sioux to ride the trails and back country. So far, only Kristina has been able to enjoy that beauty. A week after settling in their new home, Michelob managed to get a 3 inch cut on the front of his right hock. After removing the stitches he reopened the cut and we had to re-stitch it and wait another 2 weeks for it to heal. Kristina has been on a couple of rides with the lady we are boarding with, including a 10 mile poker ride last Saturday.

However, we have been able to enjoy a ‘Rubber Duck Race’ in Pony, MT. For $10 you can purchase a rubber duck and lunch. The numbered ducks are dropped into the creek, and the first duck to reach the finish wins $300. Our ducks were obviously not very good swimmers. CCC could possibly use this as a fun event during the Pleasure Show. Harmon Field and Fence offer perfect venues for a Rubber Duck Race.

Congratulations for a very successful HDT!  It sounded as though everyone had a great time and as usual great participation from everyone in the club. It looks as though you have a very busy calendar of events for the rest of the year.

PAST EVENTS

May 29, 30:  The CCC Horse Driving Trial, one of the major events in our calendar, was a great success.  We were supported by an excellent turnout of exhibitors.  The “supporting cast” of volunteers is too large to identify individually.  Dale Govus deserves recognition for setting up a great cones course.  One who merits our heartfelt thanks is Tom Bowers.  Not like many of us, Tom has a full-time job.  He sacrificed several days of his personal vacation time.  He laid out the marathon course, measuring and marking it, repairing and constructing obstacles, with all the other related details.  He then took time to conduct a clinic for exhibitors during the activities.

With this newsletter, I’m attaching documents showing detailed results, and the champion and special awards.

In case you’re not aware, Mike Arnold maintains a website – http://drivingnews.us/ - where he posts results very promptly.  Even interim results, as the event is in process.

June 4-6:  Garden State CDE.  Suzi Dixon had some successes in Prelim Single Pony, placing second in dressage, third in the marathon, and unfortunately the “E” in cones.

OTHER NEWS

Our condolences to Claudette Robinson, on the loss of her mother.

A card received from Lois Merrill:

“To Board and Members:

Thank you for remembering Alan with a gift to the Foothills Humane Society.  Alan spent many happy hours volunteering there – just as he spent many happy hours with his horses and friends like you.

                                                                                    Sincerely, Lois”

Eve Arensberg has 25 HELMETS REQUIRED signs for sale at $3.50 each.  She has orders from several neighbors for their barns, or at entrance to CETA or FETA trails, or wherever appropriate.  You may get them from Eve, or from Claudette.  Eve’s e-mail is bellringer1@windstream.net.

Jer Zmick has lost his pot!  Actually, it is the very large kettle he used for preparing his famous “Road Kill Chili.”  If you can locate it for him, he may offer some small reward. 864/457-5894  geraldzmick@windstream.net
